Empowered by Faith and Mentorship
The following is a beautiful and powerful testimony of Latasha’s journey and how mentoring has made a difference in her life. The way she has grown not only in managing her finances but also in her faith is inspiring. As she herself said, “"Mentoring has made a huge impact on my family and me. It's been a constant reminder to stay present in my faith. I felt so alone, but just like that, God showed up and placed me in your path. I am forever grateful for this experience and for everyone connected to Salty Family Services. Mentoring has truly shifted my life. Keep reaching others to strengthen their faith.
Latasha, a single mother of four, faced significant financial struggles after Hurricane Milton, which had a devastating impact on her family. Latasha spent what little money she had to prepare for the storm, purchasing food and supplies. As a result, she found herself unable to pay her utility bills and fell behind. It was then that she reached out to Parkview Church, one of our community partners, who not only helped her apply for assistance but also gathered and delivered furniture donations. Through our partnership with Parkview Church, Latasha was connected with Salty Family Services.
She was offered the chance to meet with a mentor, and she eagerly drove to the Rescue Station in Ormond Beach from her job working the night shift in St. Augustine. She arrived filled with gratitude for the help she was receiving. That initial meeting marked the beginning of a long-term mentoring relationship.
From the start, Latasha demonstrated an unwavering faith and a strong determination to provide for her family. However, it became clear that she wasn’t familiar with managing a budget. Balancing her night job with raising children is no easy task. She tries to rest during the day but still makes it a priority to be there for her kids when they come home. Cooking dinner and helping with homework are important ways she connects with them.
As Latasha began learning about budgeting, she often said, “Sometimes you’ve got to crawl before you can walk.” Reflecting on her past, she explained that just a year ago, she and her children were living in a motel while she worked at McDonald’s. Then, she was able to secure a job at the Hilton, which allowed her to move into their current residence.
During her sessions with her mentor, it became evident that Latasha had been relying on payday loans to cover her bills. Her mentor explained the high costs associated with these loans and guided her on how to better plan and manage her expenses.
Throughout their time together, Latasha faced many life challenges, and mentoring often went beyond financial education. Her mentor consistently encouraged her to stay focused on God’s blessings and provision, especially during difficult times. Latasha agreed, sharing that keeping her focus on Jesus had made all the difference. One memorable moment came when, at the end of a meeting, Latasha asked for prayer for the victims of the fires in California, acknowledging how the tragedies happening in the country made her realize how truly blessed she was.
Over time, and with her mentor’s guidance, Latasha became more disciplined in tracking her spending. She began researching ways to improve her credit and set goals for the future, including purchasing a home in the next two years. Her mentor affirmed these goals, reminding her that being proactive and planning ahead was the best way to move forward. Latasha was encouraged to explore resources like Dave Ramsey’s money-saving tools.
As their mentoring sessions came to a close, Latasha expressed her gratitude for all that she had gained. She shared that mentoring had helped her regain focus on her faith, saying, “Before my feet even hit the floor, I talk to Him.” She realized how far she had drifted from the Lord and how much she needed to center her life around Him again.
Latasha’s story highlights the importance of community support, especially from partners like Parkview Church, and the personal growth that comes with being supported through life’s challenges. Latasha's shift from feeling alone to finding strength in her faith and the guidance she received is a powerful reminder of how mentoring can transform lives.
