A Step Toward Stability: One Family’s Story

A family of four recently reached out to Salty Family Services for rental assistance after a challenging year. The mom had lost her job due to health issues, and although she is working again, catching up has been difficult. Soon after, Dad was laid off, and because his income had been their main support, the family quickly fell behind. Late fees to their landlord added up to thousands over time, and the small side gig income they had wasn’t enough to keep up.

When they connected with SFS, they were paired with a mentor and began meeting regularly to work through a realistic budget. Over several weeks, they used a calendar to map out income, expenses, and debt so they could clearly see what needed to change.

Both parents are employed again and making steady progress. Their mentor shared that for the first time in a long time, this family is beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Part of that hope comes from a meaningful milestone: they are on track to pay their landlord on time for December and January—cutting out the late fees that have weighed them down for so long.

The picture they shared shows their calendar with the rent amount noted and the words “no late fees” written beside it with a smiley face. It’s simple, but it represents a turning point for them.

At Salty Family Services, we count it a privilege to walk alongside families like this one as they take steady, practical steps toward stability and a brighter future.
